This popular cafe in midtown Newport News run by Mike and Kippe O'Neil since 1981 has earned a loyal following for its speedy service, value and pub atmosphere. The Big O Burger, the Pita Christian and the crab cakes are favorites, and there's a variety of sandwiches, soups and salads, plus heartier fare. Several specials, including such homemade desserts as cobbler, are listed on blackboards both inside and outside. Six televisions provide entertainment for those not into people-watching. Crab Shack Seafood Restaurant on the James

A few years back, the Crab Shack Seafood Restaurant transformed from a genuine shack near the base of the James River Fishing Pier to a light, bright casual spot to eat, drink and be merry. The dining room is full of blond wood and sunshine, with a cheerful but not excessive noise level. There's a bar at the end that's just as light and cheery. An enclosed deck stretches the length of the restaurant. In warm weather, that's the place to sit. Open a window and you can catch the cool, salty river breeze. Average entree $10-15. Colonial Williamsburg

Colonial Williamsburg is the country's most impressive historic resuscitation project. Before 1926 the second Virginia capital (1699-1780) was dissolving from gentle neglect. Today, after a multi-million-dollar restoration and reconstruction, Colonial Williamsburg is a sanitized copy of the way it was in the 1760s. More than 500 buildings have been restored or reconstructed in the 173-acre historic area. Jamestown Settlement

Visit America's first permanent English colony. See full-scale replicas of the Susan Constant, Godspeed, and Discovery, indoor museums filled with artifacts, and outdoor exhibits demonstrating life at the settlement. Times and events are seasonal.

 

Yorktown National Battlefield

Help at the visitor center will get you started on a tour of the exhibits, film and points of interest relating to the battles and subsequent British surrender in October 1781. Stops include remains of British entrenchments around the small Colonial port town, the Victory Monument, the site of Gen. George Washington's headquarters, the surrender field and several structures in old Yorktown. Information about other Yorktown sites and Civil War sites in the park is available at the visitor center.
