WIDE EYED WANDA'SWONDROUSWETLAND REVIEW
ABOUT THE SHOW:
Over the course of the program, Wanda introduces Seemore to over forty creatures that live in the tidal saltmarsh. That's the largest puppet cast ever assembled for a Rainbow show. Included are a five foot tall blue heron, a Great White Egret, Fiddler Crabs who dance the hoe-down and a group of fireflies who light up the night. The original musical was created in association with the Virginia Aquarium through a grant from the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund. It is available exclusively from Young Audiences of Virginia. The entire show was written by David Messick and features eight new songs . "The blue heron sings and dances to a swing-styled big band number called 'Come on Down to My Place,' " said Messick. " It was fun writing in a new style. We also have two completely instrumental pieces which challenged us first in the studio and later in rehearsal. Our puppeteer's skill will be tested as they carry entire numbers completely to music. The most interesting of these pieces is the 'Sunset Symphony.' As the sun sets, fireflies fill the sky. They twinkle to the music. They are joined by chirping crickets and croaking frogs. Our music producer Steve Scheffler actually sampled the voices of live animals and then added them, in perfect pitch to the orchestra."
